Nutrient film technique runs a shallow stream of nutrient solution along a watertight channel, past bare roots, and recirculates it. There is no growing medium to buy or dispose of and very little water is lost, which is most of why NFT is the system people start with for leafy crops.
100 x 50 mm is the size for lettuce, spinach, herbs and other light leafy plants. The channels are extruded here from virgin UPVC rather than reprocessed material, and the firm rates them at over ten years of working life with reasonable care.
One thing worth knowing before choosing NFT: it holds very little in reserve. If the pump stops, the film stops with it, and there is no reservoir buffering the roots in the meantime. On a site with an unreliable supply, plan for backup.
