Hydroponic Nutrient Granules
Two-part hydroponic nutrients in 5 kg bags, blended separately for vegetables, fruit and flowers.
Hydroponic nutrients have to do a job that fertiliser in a field does not. A plant grown in soil draws on whatever the ground already holds, and feeding it tops that up. A plant grown in water has no reserve to draw on at all, so every element it needs for the whole of its life has to arrive dissolved in the solution. That is the difference between a fertiliser and a complete nutrient, and it is why a soilless system cannot be run on the bag from the agri shop.
This is a two-part granular series in 5 kg bags, supplied in separate blends for vegetables, for fruiting crops and for flowers.
WHY IT COMES IN TWO PARTS. This catches people out, and the reason is chemistry rather than marketing. Calcium and sulphate will not stay in the same concentrated solution: put them in one bottle at strength and they combine into a solid that settles out, taking the calcium with it. The same happens between calcium and phosphate. Split across two parts they stay separated until the moment they are diluted into the tank, where the concentrations are low enough that nothing drops out and the plant gets everything it was supposed to. The practical rule that follows: add each part to the water separately and stir it in, and never pour one concentrate into the other.
WHAT COMPLETE MEANS HERE. Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium are the three a bag of fertiliser is sold on, and on their own they will not finish a crop. The series also carries the secondary nutrients - calcium, magnesium and sulphur - and the trace elements a plant needs in small amounts and fails without: iron, manganese, zinc, copper, boron and molybdenum. In soil most of those are simply present. In a recirculating channel none of them are, and a deficiency shows up in the leaf within weeks rather than seasons.
WHY THREE BLENDS RATHER THAN ONE. A lettuce is being grown for its leaves and wants nitrogen to make them. A tomato or a capsicum spends the first weeks doing the same and then switches to setting and filling fruit, which is a potassium job, and calcium demand rises with it - blossom end rot is a calcium delivery failure, not a disease. Flowers want a third balance again. One ratio for all three is a compromise for all three, which is why these are blended separately.
IT IS NOT ONLY FOR HYDROPONICS. The granules dissolve for tank use, and the same bags can be used in soil or in coco peat, where the complete formulation is still an advantage because coco holds almost nothing of its own.
WHAT TO CHECK ONCE IT IS RUNNING. Two readings tell you most of what is happening in a tank: EC, which is how much nutrient is dissolved, and pH, which decides whether the plant can take it up. A solution can be at the right strength and still starve a crop if the pH has drifted, because several of the trace elements above stop being available outside a fairly narrow band. Both move as the plants drink and as water evaporates, so both are checked rather than set once.
Which blend suits your crop, and what schedule to run it on, is worth a conversation rather than a guess - the answer depends on what you are growing, what stage it is at and what your water is like before anything is added to it. Nutrient scheduling is part of the consultancy, and we would rather size it with you than sell you a bag and wish you luck.
